My pool career got its start when I was 18. I had moved to new town, where I knew no one except my family…and so I had no social life. My father had always loved playing pool…so I accompanied him to the local pool room one night to watch him play. That evening, I noticed a really cute guy who I learned was a regular at that particular establishment. So…I went back the next week, and the week after that, and the week after that! Eventually, I picked up a cue and started playing. I guess I was a natural, because everyone told me I had a lot of potential. I loved the game…so I kept playing…eventually entering weekly tournaments and occasionally winning them. It was in these early stages that I earned the nickname Dragon Lady…partly because of my Asian heritage…and partly because I got so frustrated while trying to get better at the game!
When I was 23, I started dating someone who changed my game. He was a good player, and he really helped me improve my skills and understand the game of 9-ball. After several years of playing night and day, day and night…I finally started playing in qualifiers to try and earn the right to play in professional events. I won my first qualifier in 1999, and played in my first WPBA event in 2000.
In 2002, I earned my pro card with the WPBA at the BCA Invitational event in Las Vegas. As a matter of fact, that was a complete breakthrough event for me…as I finished in 5th place…just one round out of the TV matches. That event was a real eye-opener for me…I realized that I truly belonged on the WPBA, competing amongst the world’s best players.
Since turning professional, I have accomplished a great many things in my career. I have represented the US in two World Championships, been ranked consistently in the Top 16 in the world, and have played on numerous televised matches on ESPN. In addition, I’ve done charity events, military appearances, and worked with my local teen center.
Most recently, I started a regional tour in Southern California for the new wave of amateur ladies looking to become professional. I’ve been so fortunate to have a lot of support and help throughout my career…so running this tour is my way of giving back to the sport that has given me so much. |
